INTERVIEW TIPS

  • Dress for success in a business-like manner and pay close attention to hair‚ clothes‚ make-up - first impressions definitely count.
  • Take to the interview a neatly bound spare copy of your resume in case it is requested. If applicable‚ take transcripts to the interview.
  • Be prepared - gather as much information about the company as possible - check if they have a website; see if they are registered on the stock market. Show your initiative.
  • Do not be afraid to ask questions. It is important to ensure that the position is the right one for you‚ just as the interviewer needs to know that you are the right person for the position.
  • Listen to the interviewer and do not take over the interview!
  • Speak clearly and confidently. Take a few seconds to gather your thoughts before speaking.
  • Eye contact is very important in showing confidence.
  • Be positive about your skills and capabilities. Let the interviewer know of previous projects undertaken and initiatives instigated‚ minor things as well as the large. Show employers that you not only look at the ‘big picture’ but also the small details.

HOW TO WRITE A RESUME

  • Importantly‚ keep your resume succinct and to the point. Organise the information in a way that is eye catching and easy to read.
  • It is preferable not to write in the first person.
  • Chronologically list your employment history - most recent position should be your first entry.
  • Fill in any missing gaps in employment record. If there are any‚ give a brief explanation.
  • Note ‘reasons for leaving’. Keep it concise and avoid critical comments.
  • State the industry of employer‚ e.g.‚ Law Firm‚ Advertising‚ Engineering‚ etc. In many instances the name of the company is not enough to indicate industry.
  • If in legal note areas of experience in e.g. Conveyancing‚ Litigation etc.
  • List in point form ‘duties’ and ‘skills’.
  • Check spelling and grammar thoroughly. Your resume must be error free.
  • Let it be known exactly what you are looking for. Focus on pertinent points from your previous experience that relate to the position for which you are applying.
